Preschool

For one of my classes this semester I had to complete 40 hours of fieldwork in a preschool classroom. Yesterday was my last day working in their class. I was sad to leave but I left with an awesome  homemade card signed by all the children accompanied with an adorable picture! As a thank you from me, I left them a book I read to them for their library. It's a cute story called "The Family Book" by Todd Parr.

It was a great experience being in preschool, of course! How could it not be? I was able to sing, dance and help children with their numbers, letters and sounds and art projects. It was so rewarding to see children grow and learn new things each and every day. Preschoolers are enthusiastic and energetic! I love being with those little kiddos!  I also love being in a classroom with a teacher who is confident and knows what they are doing. After all I want to learn from them- I want to see what works and what doesn't. An experienced teacher has a bag full of tricks- and I want to know them all so I can use them in my classroom. I was fortunate to be in a class with a teacher like so.  I admire her hard work, dedication, patience and organization.

I think about being a teacher a lot. really. a. lot. - almost to the point of obsession. I jot down notes and ideas in my little book I carry around -"Helpful Teaching Tactics." I have an entire shelf of books on  teaching. I have a pinterest board dedicated to teaching lessons and ideas. I follow educational topics on twitter.  I know with a good education and lots of practice I can be a teacher who makes a positive difference in the lives of children.  I want to be the teacher children always remember- The teacher who was a little silly and fun, who smiled and laughed everyday, the teacher who pushed her students to achieve higher than they thought was possible, the teacher who was so passionate about learning that she inspired students to work hard to reach their goals.  I want to be the teacher that connects with every child, someone that makes every child feel good. Because I always say 'When you feel good, you do good!' Here's to doing more good in the world!

The Picture Book That Touched My Life

There are so many awesome, adorable, amazing picture books out there! So many I love and hold dear to my heart. One I that I enjoyed with my daughter is The Art Lesson by Tomie dePaola. The book is actually about the author when he was a young boy. He always knew he wanted to be an artist and draws pictures for everyone he knows. His relatives display his artwork in their homes, on walls and at their places of work. Tomie is so excited to start school and have art lessons. But when he gets to school, he finds out that art lessons are not what he expected. This cute story reminds me of my daughter- she too loves to draw, even as a toddler she would create 'masterpieces' and pass them out to family or friends. When she started school, she took art very seriously. She took her time illustrating pictures, sometimes much to the dismay of her teachers. She could relate to the Tomie because her art lessons were not what she expected- Until one year she had the most creative, energetic art teacher. My daughter finally felt understood and was not only allowed but, strongly encouraged to be creative. All it takes is one special teacher to connect with a child and give them a chance to shine in something they are passionate about. This is why I love this story. One teacher, inspiring one child to think outside the box.

Addicted to Pinterest

I'm addicted.. I'm really quite addicted to Pinterest. Have you heard of it? If you're not familiar with Pinterest, let me explain. It's simply the best, yes the best thing on the internet! (Better than social network!) I think you too will fall deeply in love with it, just like I did!

What is Pinterest?  Pinterest is a virtual pin-board, it lets you organize and share everything you find on the internet. I first became introduced to Pinterest over the summer through a blog I follow.  From the very first day I discovered Pinterest I haven't been able to go a day with searching through the site. Pinterest has everything!! The site has every category you can think of - from people to pets, to DIY house projects to one of my favorite - an entire section dedicated to education! So many amazing bloggers, teachers, educators, and parents post or "pin" as they say to their virtual boards. The pins are linked directly to the original site and with a simple click you are taken right to the source. For example, if you are looking for classroom organization tips, or how to set up your reading workshop, or introduce a lesson- its all conveniently located at pinterest.

I may not be a teacher..yet, but when I am and have my own classroom filled with children- I will be ready with a lot of tips and tricks up my sleeve!

If you are interested, go check out my teaching pinterest board and see all the fantastic ideas I hope to use in the classroom!

Poem for Sophia

The Day is Done

The sky is dark
The moon is full
Stars shine like a spark

Books are read
cozy in jams
time for bed

Kiss goodnight
snuggle in
hug you tight

Close your eyes
the day is done
we had so much fun
but now it's time to rest
your sleepy head.

Nighty night
I love you
Sleep tight

Hurricane Sandy

On October 28, 2012, Connecticut was slammed by Hurricane Sandy. The weather stations had been preparing everyone for a couple of days before "to hope for the best but to prepare for the worst." Meteorologists were predicting some of the worst weather we've ever seen to hit CT.

Just one year ago, Tropical Storm Irene severely hit Connecticut and for so many the thought of that storm still lingered as a horrible memory. Many people by the shoreline took the warnings of Sandy very seriously. Homes were boarded and thousands of people evacuated.

Hurricane Sandy damaged houses, road ways and bridges. Almost a half million people were left with out power.  Communities along the shore were hit the worst. Houses were flooded with enormous amounts of water, sand covered roads, boats were found in yards and even one a railroad track. I have never seen anything like this before. Some houses even caught on fire and burned, because trying to access them was impossible. The pictures from the news are just devastating.

We were the fortunate ones, our home had just a few minor things to clean up and tend to. I'm so grateful- we had power the entire too. As I sit here, I feel a deep sense of wanting to help my fellow communities. Today, the governor asked people to make donations, time or money. The Red Cross is asking people to donate blood because they need it badly. So today, I'm giving blood at the Red Cross, it's a very small way to give back, but it's something. I know by giving blood I am helping someone.

Thousands of people were effected by Hurricane Sandy. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families (and their pets) who are trying to make sense of all the damages left to clean up. And to all the hardworking crews of people helping to restore power and the communities for working together to cleanup. My prayers are with you all.

I Did It!

I ran my first marathon on October 13, 2012! I still can't believe I ran 26.2 miles. I loved every minute of it. Seriously, it was the best feeling in the world!

Why would I or anyone for that matter run 26.2 miles? Good question!
It wasn’t my idea, it was actually my sister-in-law's idea. She wanted to run a marathon before she turned 40 and who better to convince to do it with her then my sister, Erin and I. (haha) We ran 5k races before and have been running half marathons together for quite some time but never did we think, well, I think, I could run a marathon. But sometimes things are just meant to be and this was one of those times...

The timing of it all couldn't have been better if it was planned. My sister and I just finished a half marathon in Cheshire - It was a great race and we both were feeling strong and confident about running. When Lisa, my sister-in-law cornered us both her kitchen, she excitedly said, “I was thinking” pause, “wouldn’t it be awesome if we ran a marathon!?” “umm, Yeah, I said it would be! but, why would anyone want to ran 26.2 miles? It sounds like torture!” I said half jokingly and half seriously. Erin was quick to say “yes, let’s do it!” “We have to do it!” Looking towards me they both could sense my hesitation.

I was really, really, really very reluctant about a marathon, what if I couldn't do it physically?  What if my knees gave out (I have bad knees) or I got injured so badly that I could never run again? and running for 4 hours straight- is just crazy. But after listening to reasons that Lisa and Erin gave me- in the end I agreed! “Ok, let’s do it! I’m in!” After all,  I didn't want to let down my sister or Lisa but more importantly I didn’t want to let myself down for not trying to run it.

Bring on the training! Training for a marathon requires a lot of perseverance and determination.  We followed an intense training schedule, which lasted  for 3 long months. I had to run even when I didn’t want to. I had to make training for a marathon a priority. It took a lot of time and planning. Following the training is what made us strong, physically and mentally fit to run 26.2 miles.

I'm so glad that I didn't let my fears of not being able to run 26.2 miles get the best of me, because in the end, it was all worth it. I learned something through it all too -sometimes trying something for the first time can be scary, but with the right attitude, a plan and a lot of motivation- the results just might surprise you.. in a very good way!

Writer's Workshop For Preschoolers

This week in my Design for Curriculum class we read an article called "Documenting Children's Play Stories to Enhance Learning".The article connected preschoolers to Writer's Workshop.  The article stated young children need to think about themselves as authors. It really stuck with me because I had never heard anyone refer to such young children as authors. Preschoolers are still practicing writing their names, authors? hardly, I thought. However, I learned writing is much more than just putting a pencil to paper and creating sentences. Writing has many components, as the teacher in the article pointed out. Writing consists of thoughts, feeling and actions. That is when the light bulb went off in my head! Preschoolers have all of that! They are creative, imaginative and curious. They are perfect for creating stories!

The teacher observed and documented children playing in the dramatic area. There were 3 children working together to fix a ship that was surrounded by shark infested water. She wrote word for word what they were saying and doing. Afterwards she put the 'story' into a class book including illustrations from the children. This was very exciting for the children! They all wanted to 'write stories!'  It was contagious.

The teacher was right- children are authors. They had the components of a story-  characters, plot, and setting. It was amazing to me to think of children creating their very own stories. This teacher was able to connect literacy in a meaningful way to the children. I love the idea about teaching young children to think of themselves as authors because in reality they really are and so good  at too! It is so natural for them, nothing is forced.  It just happens, like we were suppose to all along write their stories. As a perspective teacher, I can't wait to document young children's stories!
